Independence USD 446 will conduct an informational session for prospective “substitute classroom instructors” on Monday, July 31, at Independence High School, 1301 N. 10th Street. The meeting is scheduled from 1:00-2:30 p.m. in the Library at IHS.
The July 31 session will allow prospective substitute teachers to learn more about the position requirements in terms of qualifications, responsibilities, time commitment and licensing. Prospective subs will also be paid two hours of “sub time” for attending this meeting once they complete their first teaching assignment in USD 446.
To become a substitute teacher, prospective candidates must hold a high school diploma and obtain an appropriate license from the Kansas State Department of Education which includes a $60 substitute teacher license fee and a one-time $50 fee for a required KBI background check.
A full day of teaching runs from approximately 7:45 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. and pays $110 per day. Half day teaching assignments pay $55 and require either a morning or afternoon time commitment.
Anyone interested in becoming a Substitute Classroom Instructor in the Independence Public Schools should contact Krista Doub at 620-332-1800 and plan to attend the July 31 training session.
Substitute teachers who worked for USD 446 during the 2022-23 school year are not required to attend but must contact the board of education office to schedule a time to complete annual mandatory training in Emergency Safety Interventions.
